If you're searching for some holiday activities over the upcoming easter weekend, you can leave the chocolate behind (briefly!) and head to a special event in Hertfordshire.
Your kids are sure to be kept entertained by a medieval jousting tournament in Knebworth and can even take their easter eggs along while they watch the action! Jousting will be performed by The Special Knights of Royal England, who are experts at providing medieval entertainment.
The value for money activities will be held at Knebworth House, Gardens and Park on April 24th and 25th and start at 11:00 BST. You can buy a family ticket for only £28 and receive a discount on this when you book online.
Younger children can also visit the park in the grounds, where they can swing and slide, before having a fun trip on the miniature railway, offering them beautiful views as they travel around the park.

Kids can try new activities for Mother's Day
If you want to offer a gentle hint to your kids about Mother's Day, you can take them along to a session in Chelmsford where they can try new activities and make you your own book!
The event, which draws inspiration from a book by Anthony Browne (the current Children's Laureate), called My Mum, will allow children to learn about bookmaking and create a special present for you.
Even better, the session is free and little ones can drop in to try new activities! Kids can head down to the town's Just Imagine Story Centre on April 2nd at 11:00 BST.
If your kids are lovers of literature, they can also visit the centre on April 9th at 11:00 BST to take part in a monster craft session with Lee Carr, the author of Monster Baby. Children aged four and above can come along to make their own monster hands and monster headbands.
After the fun they may want to read Lee's book, which is about a boy called Jake who has to help his baby sister go to sleep. The only problem is that she wants to stay awake and starts growing fur!

Try new activities at the Cambridge Science Festival
This weekend is the last chance you'll have to take the kids to try new activities at a top science festival.
The Cambridge Science Festival is being held for the last day on March 27th. If you decide to check it out on the Sunday you can wonder at a photo exhibition on nano engineering and space technology at the Michaelhouse Centre between 08:00 BST and 17:00 BST.
If your kids are budding historians, they may also appreciate The Cambridge Phenomenon, where they can find out more about famous people and inventions from the area. It's being held at the Cambridge Museum of Technology and really is a value for money activity as adults only have to pay £3 entry and kids £1.50.
This cost also allows you to explore the whole museum, a whole day of fun for the family!
If all this activity has left you hungry, you can always pop along to Auntie's Teashop, a traditional English tearoom that serves a selection of yummy treats, such as tangy lemon tart, chocolate fudge cake and hot gingerbread with maple syrup.

Try new activities at Woofs & Wellies
If your family are mad about their furry friend, they can now try new activities with their favourite dog at Woofs & Wellies in Essex.
This is a sponsored dog walk and companion show where families can get out in the great outdoors and choose from one of two dog walks, with money going to the Saint Francis Hospice in Romford.
There's the 5km route through Hainault Forest as well as the shorter 3.5kn route, both of which start and end at the Lambourne End Outdoor Centre.
People can even enter their four-legged friend into the Companion Dog show, where there are fun categories like the most handsome dog and dog with the waggiest tail.
It's only £5 for each family member that attends, making it a value for money day out! Even better, your dog will also get a goody bag and special medal for taking part.
Kids who have to be cajoled into getting fit may also want to take part after hearing about Billy Elliott star Jamie Bell's recent revelation to the Metro. He said that he got fit for his new film The Eagle by walking his dog!

Try new activities to get fit
If you need an excuse to get kids more active and to try new activities when they play, recent research could have provided it.
A study from the University of Bristol found that children could try new activities that are physical if parents encourage them to take part in play that is active rather than more sedentary, just the excuse to get them outdoors!
The study, called What Is The Meaning and Nature of Active Play For Today's Children In The UK?, found kids thought that play constituted a number of activities, including relaxed pursuits and more active ones.
"Contemporary children do engage in active play and value both the physical and social benefits it provides. This suggests that some children, at least, do not prefer to spend all their time watching TV or on computer," Rowan Brockman, a researcher in the Centre for Exercise, Nutrition and Health Sciences at Bristol University, said.
The research also found that girls and boys wanted to try new activities. Males wanted to ride bikes or play football, but girls did not having one specific pursuit that they favoured.
Despite this last finding, girls in Swindon have given a big thumbs up to football. A two-day development course that was organised by the Swindon Town Football in the Community Trust saw over 30 young females given coaching sessions and taking part in tournaments and competitions.

Try new activities for Mother's Day
On the one day of the year when it's all about you, how about trying value for money activities at the zoo?
People in Essex or nearby counties can head along to Colchester Zoo on April 3rd, Mother's Day.
On this day, the zoo will be holding an extra special Meet A Mum Trail, where human mothers can meet their animal counterparts and watch extra feeds, listen to talks and try some new activities.
Head along to the zoo's Discovery centre to try your hand at some crafts (which the kids are sure to love too!) and watch Mum's the word show at the Wild About Animals Theatre.
You might even want to drop hints to your children about the zoo's value for money package offer, which includes the opportunity to buy a plaque with a happy Mother's Day message which will go on an enclosure.
If you're a mum and live in the capital you may want to visit London Zoo, where one of the baby gorillas, Tiny, who has recently learned to walk, can be watched having fun with his mum Mjukuu. The perfect family day out!

Try new activities at the theatre
If you're searching for value for money activities to keep older kids entertained there's always the theatre.
Over this month and next month the Little Shop of Horrors will be performed at the Boxmore Playhouse by the Hemel Hempstead Theatre Company.
Kids can watch the youth group come together to perform this science-fiction classic, which may even inspire them to perform themselves!
The rock-musical focuses on Seymour Krelborn, a worker at Mr Mushnik's Florists, who finds an unusual exotic plant. He calls it Audrey II (after Audrey, the girl he loves) and soon discovers that the plant has a humungous appetite and is plotting world domination. Scary!
Families can watch the performance on a Thursday March 31st and on a number of dates throughout April. With tickets priced at £7 to £10 it's certainly a value for money experience.
If your kid's got a birthday coming up you may even want to hire the Boxmooor Playhouse, which is available for a number of functions and has a spacious main hall, where they can try out fun party activities.

How to choose a great Easter camp for your child
How to choose a great Easter camp for your child
1. Research what’s on offer in your local area. Ask friends for recommendations or check with your local Family Information Service for registered day camp providers.
2. Visit the website. What are your first impressions? Does the company look professional and fun? Request a brochure or information pack.
3. Check that the provider has been operating for a number of years so you know they are reliable and experienced.
4. Check what the facilities are like and that the camp is convenient for you to get to each day. Does the camp offer extended hours to fit in with your work or travel arrangements?
5. Find out if the camp is registered with Ofsted. (NB: Some camps do not have to register, but these do not cover all age groups or only offer a limited number of activities.) You can check the camps latest Ofsted report by visiting www.ofsted.gov.uk. Find out if they are as good as they say they are!
6. Call and speak to the provider first hand and ask any questions you’d like reassurance on.
7. Involve your child in the decision. Show them the website and/or brochure and what activities will be available. Most importantly does your child think the camp looks like FUN? This is after all their holiday time and they deserve the best experience!
8. Some experienced camps are very popular and do get booked up early on in the year. Make your booking in advance so that you are guaranteed a place and have your choice of dates. Lots of providers offer early booking discounts and good ones also offer money back guarantees for first timers, so you can have peace of mind.
See www.barracudas.co.uk for one such provider or call 0845 123 5299 for a copy of their free colour brochure.

Kids can try new activities with Peppa Pig
If your kids are big fans of Peppa Pig, how about taking them along to a special show in Surrey where they can try new activities?
This week little ones can enjoy Peppa Pig - Live! at the Dorking Halls Theatre.
If you're looking for value for money activities to keep your little rascals entertained, this show is sure to appeal. Tickets only cost £12.50 to £14.50 and for this price kids (and adults!) can experience a whole three hours of Peppa Pig fun.
Between 10:00GMT and 13:00GMT on Thursday March 17th, families can watch Peppa, Suzy Sheep, George, Emily Elephant and Danny Dog and hear the gang's new songs. The stage show is produced by the same producers behind Roald Dahl's The BFG and Lazy Town Live!
Three-and-a-half year old Daisy Warner who saw the show in Southend, told Peppapiglive.com: "I went to Peppa's party yesterday with Mummy and my friend Sam. It was very good and I really enjoyed it, especially the train. Peppa was very funny, and I really liked that there was a Daisy in it!"
If you live in the south but Dorking is too far away to get to, you can also watch the show in Basingstoke, Southsea, Chatham, Aldershot and Aylesbury.

Parents try new activities because of kids
As many of you already know, having little ones certainly changes how you try new activities and now research has backed this up.
A whopping 64 per cent of caregivers said that they behaved better as a result of having kids!
In addition, 44 per cent of parents who spoke to Triodos Bank revealed that they are now more careful with money as a result of having little ones to look after , while almost 30 per cent now "mind their PS and Qs" for the sake of their kids.
Many parents (27 per cent) also felt the urge to go green after their little ones arrived and 15 per cent cut back on how much gas and electricity they used.
"Having kids is the biggest prompt many people have to put their principles into action. As any parent knows, children pick up on everything, they ask questions and demand answers as to why we do things the way we do. Naturally parents are keen to pass on the values they believe in to their children," Huw Davies, head of personal banking at Triodos Bank, said.
If you want to try new activities that are eco-friendly with your little girl, how about painting her nails? Normal varieties can leave people light headed, but the Telegraph recommended trying Piggy Paint, an eco-friendly, non-toxic range that even comes in a glow in the dark shade.

Take part in holiday activities with the kids
If you're looking for cheap ways to try new activities with your kids during the next school holidays, you can breathe a sigh of relief. Madeformums.com has offered you some advice on how to keep the little ones happy and your pockets too!
The website said that busy mums like you can take children to parks, woods and wildlife reserves to look for insects. A magnifying glass might come in handy, as will a jar to inspect creepy crawlies properly.
Little ones may also want to collect leaves, which they can bring back home with them and use in pictures or for leaf-printing.
On wet and windy days, families can join their local library and while away an afternoon browsing the bookshelves. Some libraries even have free holiday activities on offer for members, making it an even more fun experience!
If you want your little ones to learn to be environmentally friendly in an exciting way, how about going for an eco-friendly book? The Ecologist recommended The Trouble With Dragons by Debi Gliori, a tale of a planet filled with wasteful dragons who learn to take better care of the earth.

Kids can try new activities for charity
Kids now have the chance to try new activities with Paddington Bear and help charity too!
Everyone's famous furry friend wants little ones in primary schools, nurseries and children's groups to raise money for children's charity Action Medical research, by taking part in his Bring Your Bear event.
This involves kids on one day (from May onwards), coming to nursery or school with their favourite soft toy. You can give them one or two pounds to take along for the occasion, to help the charity's research efforts.
"Every child has a favourite bear and our Bring your Bear event is an exciting way for schools to make a real difference to other children. It's very special but very easy to do," Lizzy Chapman, Bring your Bear event manager at Action Medical Research, said.
Organisations that decide to take part will get lots of goodies to hand out to little ones, like Paddington Bear stickers and fun activity sheets.
Children are also in good company with their charitable efforts. All three of David Beckham's boys often try new activities and donate their cherished toys to sick children, who they visit at hospitals with their famous father, the footballer recently revealed.

Nurseries should encourage kids to try new activities outside
Little ones should be encouraged to try new activities outdoors by nursery schools they go to, according to one expert on the subject.
Sara Knight, who works for Anglia Ruskin University, pointed out that young kids must be able to do this to develop, even though nurseries may feel nervous about letting them play outside.
She wrote in her book Risk and Adventure in Early Years Outdoor Play: Learning from Forest Schools that outdoor activities should be kept exciting and adventurous to keep little ones entertained.
"We owe it to the futures of individual children and to a healthy society to foster habits of adventurous outdoor activities as early as possible," according to Sara.
She pointed out that kids should be able to try new activities that involve "reasonable risks", such as scrambling over piles of logs, instead of being stuck in a sterile environment.
In addition, Mykidshealth.co.uk said that parents can take part in value for money activities with their kids outside by playing football and bringing hot chocolate along for a half-time treat!

Try new activities with David Bellamy
If you want your kids to try new activities outdoors you may want to head along to an event in Rotherhithe this month.
Environmentalist David Bellamy is coming to the area to lead a fun nature day for all the family.
On March 27th families can join the star at King's Stairs Gardens for a nature trail on which kids can learn more about flora and fauna.
Little ones joining in will also get the chance to meet some owls at the park, which is under threat from developments.
Donna Spedding, a local mum, said: "This Nature Day is to provide an educational and fun-filled day in King’s Stairs Gardens, as well as showcasing the park’s environmental and community benefits."
Kids will also be able to get involved with building their own feeders and bird boxes, which you can then display in your garden!
Little ones who love arts and crafts can take part in some activities with Southwark Mobile Play Unit.
If that wasn't already enough, kids (and parents!) can have their faces painted for free.
In addition, older kids who want a more hair-raising experience of nature can try watching Deadly 60, a children's natural history series in which presenter Steve Backshall meets killer wildlife. It's one to watch!

Kids try new activities by planting trees
A group of school kids in south-east London have got back to nature by planting trees, a fun pursuit for those who want to try new activities.
Children at St John’s RC Primary School this week launched The Big Tree Plant by doing just that, Docklands24.co.uk reported.
The project aims to have one million trees planted in the UK by 2014.
Janice Babb, headteacher at the school, said: "Trees provide a great habitat and food supply for birds, mammals and insects."
On Monday March 7th pupils were pictured grinning and enjoying themselves as they decided to try new activities and put the saplings in the ground.
The special ceremony was also attended by Richard McIlwain from Keep Britain Tidy , teachers at the school and local dignitaries.
Adults in the south of England have also been getting in on the tree-planting action, with workers at Basingstoke's Phillips Solicitors gifting the Crabtree Plantation to 25 silver birch trees. The trees were planted as part of holiday activities in celebration of the firm's 25th anniversary, Andoveradvertiser.co.uk reported.

Kids with epilepsy try new activities
Children who have epilepsy can now try new activities when they read a book that is all about their condition.
The subject has been dealt with in a new piece of reading matter that was written by two healthcare professionals.
Astacia Coates, a nine-year-old who read the book and has the condition, said: "It was easy to read and I liked the pictures. My friends will see it is not such a scary thing."
Kids who have just been diagnosed with the condition will now be given the book, which was devised by Professor Frank Baig, a visiting academic at the University of Bedfordshire, and Dr Chinnaiah Yemula, a consultant paediatrician who works in the town.
Last week My Doctor Says I Have Epilepsy - A Child’s Journey was released at the Child Development Centre in the town of Kempston.
Those who are aged six to 12 and want to try new activities can complete the book's word search and puzzles and enjoy the illustrations in it.
Kids who want to try value for money activities like reading will also be excited to find out that Sainsbury's has launched a range of books for pre-school children. Now little ones can be treated to a book while you do your shopping!

Try new activities at Hever castle and gardens
As the days grow longer (and sunnier!) families are thinking of leaving their TVs and computers behind and are looking for value for money activities outdoors.
Parents in Kent will be happy to hear that a nearby attraction is holding a special event until November this year that's suitable for all ages, so there's plenty of time to head along!
At the moment Hever Castle and Gardens – where the infamous Ann Boleyn grew up – is holding an exhibition called Hever Castle: A Family Affair, which allows visitors to learn more about how people have lived at the historic building over the centuries.
Families can look at rare documents and photos as well as portraits to learn more about the castle since it was built way back in the 13th century by William de Hever.
Who knows, kids may love the value for money activities so much that parents may want to buy the whole family annual passes. Kids can visit both the castles and gardens over the year for only £19 and adults for the price of £33.25. What a bargain!

Mum helps kids to try new activities
One hard working mum has spoken about an organisation she founded to help her little ones try new activities.
Caroline Johnston - who is mum to Tom, 12, Henry, eight, and Caroline and Freddie, both four – told the West Sussex County Times that a group of local parents formed the You Can Do It! Group after sharing coffee at her home one day.
They decided that their kids, who have special needs, did not have enough after school activities for them to enjoy and take part in with their siblings
So they took action and formed the group, which now caters to around 100 people of all ages each week, offering a variety of value for money activities, like arts and sports courses.
Caroline said: "To see the children enjoying themselves, that’s what makes you want to carry on doing it."
The busy mum now hopes that her venture can get charity status to help it keep organising value for money activities, like dance, table tennis and gymnastics for locals.
Families who want to try activities outdoors with their kids also have many gardens to choose from in Sussex. People may appreciate Arundel Castle (and its 400 acres!), Bedgbury National Pinetum & Forest, or Borde Hill Garden.

School organises activities for children on Pancake Day
A school in Hertfordshire is set to try new activities next week when it holds a special event for Pancake Day.
Kids at a Rickmansworth School will have the chance to take part in a pancake relay, which teachers have planned to hold so that little ones can learn more about RE.
The traditional race will be held at Arnett Hills School on Berry Lane on Tuesday 8th March at 1pm - just in time for a pancake lunch!
It has been planned for this month's Celebrating RE initiative, which schools across the UK have decided to try new activities for.
Parents in Hertfordshire may also want to treat their kids to pancakes on Shrove Tuesday after school. They are a number of places in nearby London that serve the yummy treats, such as Dudley's Pancake House in Barnet and My Old Dutch Pancake House in High Holborn, only a short train ride away!

Children in Norfolk try new activities for World Book Day
Little ones in Norfolk were able to try new activities this week as part of World Book Day.
Norwichadvertiser24.co.uk reported that kids across the county were able to join others around the world as small hands grabbed their favourite books.
They may have also visited the Guardian's new children's books site after school to continue the theme of the day.
Children at Little People’s Montessori Nursery School in Norwich were treated to a book reading from Tom Blofeld, a local author.
"Some of the children brought books with them which have come from around the world. It is the idea that we are all doing the same thing on the same day," Emma Clough, owner of the nursery, said.
Eleswhere in Norfolk, children at St Martin at Shouldham got to try new activities that were themed around the Pied Piper of Hamelin, the first time the school has used one book as its theme for the day. Everyone was allowed to dress up, with lots of rats roaming the corridors!

Kids try new activities on bikes
School Kids across the country looking to try new activities have decided to get on their bikes.
But this is a bike ride with a difference, as it's a virtual race organised by Bike Hub.
The Big Pedal event lasts for three weeks and involves kids (as well as parents and teachers) following a stage-race format.
From Monday 7th March, everyone who decides to get involved (more than 800 schools so far) will cycle to school and the more who do so every day, the faster a school's time will be. At the end of the events the winner will be named as the place with the lowest time.
"We’re delighted with how many schools have signed up to take part. The Big Pedal is a great way for whole school communities to join together as they take on schools from across the country," Sustrans school travel director Paul Osborne said.
Any schools across the UK who want their pupils to try new activities can decide to join in the event free.
And they'll be in good company. British cyclist Mark Cavendish expressed delight to Metro that every time he returns home (he's based in Italy) more and more people seem to be enjoying cycling. It's definitely time that people got on their bikes!

If you're looking for value for money activities for the family, why not try heading to local attractions?
Families who live in the south-east have an exciting option open to them in the form of the Imperial War Museum (IWM), Cambridge-news.co.uk reported.
The ever-popular Duxford museum was visited by almost 400,000 people last year, a report from the Association of Leading Visitor Attractions said. So you'll be in good company!

They pointed out that this year will be no different, with a variety of exciting events on offer if you want to try new activities.
There'll be air shows in celebration of women in aviation, the 75th Anniversary of the Spitfire, the Spring Air Show and the Autumn Air Show, to name a few.

Try new activities like youth hockey
Kids in Cambridgeshire have been taking part in a variety of holiday activities to keep them busy, including youth hockey.
Not only did children at Perse Girls School get to try new activities this half-term, they also got coached by non-other than Cambridge City skipper Ben Hudson and GB international Glenn Kirkham, which was sure to keep them excited!
"It was a real pleasure to coach at this event. We did a lot on technical things and improving individual skills. We were looking at dribbling and did quite a lot of work on hitting this week," Glenn told Cambridge-news.co.uk.
The sessions were open to kids aged eight to 13 from all across mid-Anglia and over 40 of them turned up to join in the fun.
Ben told the news source that the holiday activities had "gone really well".
If kids in Cambridgeshire are more interested in cycling than hockey they can take part in the National Trust's sportive rides at Wimpole on September 11th. Parents who'd prefer to take things at a gentler pace can always explore the landscaped grounds of the Wimpole Estate while their kids keep more active.

Kids in Essex try new activities
Children at a school in Brentwood, Essex looking to try new activities have been supported by police with one of their endeavours.
Brentwood Weekly News reported that Blackmore Primary School was recently visited by chief inspector Simon Werrett, Brentwood's district commander, who was interested in the neighbourhood work they were carrying out.
Children in year five at the school have been forming their own Neighbourhood Watch group with the help of local officers.
"We have weekly meetings with the children to discuss safety and security measures and I was amazed at how much they took on board," police community support officer, Moira Kennedy, who regularly visits the school, said.
Each week officers go to see the children to help them try new activities such as discussing personal safety, burglary and crime reduction.
Meanwhile, David Mbaziira, head of marketing and communications at Sporting Equals, said that children at private schools have more chance to take part in sporting activities than those who are in state education.

Try new activities to stay healthy
Experts in healthy living have offered value for money tips that parents can use to make sure that their kids stay fit and well.
Nicki Waterman and Amanda Ursell told The Sun that children who are overweight may dislike the competitive sports they do at school, but that parents can counteract this by encouraging the whole family to try new activities that are fun.
One option is to all take part in walking bingo, where all the participants look for certain objects, such as a person or dog, when out for a family walk and winner is named as the first person to get to their target.
Parents can also encourage kids to try new activities by ditching the lift or escalator and racing one another to the top of a set of stairs.
Those who like dancing may also want to take part in a dance-off, a free activity that can be done in the house.
Furthermore, Lucie Russell, director of campaigns at YoungMinds, said that kids should balance the amount of time they spend playing on the computer with physical activities.
