Try summer activities for children at a toy museum

Before activity day camps begin, you might be wondering how to keep the kids entertained in Brighton.

If they're fans of toys and models, a certain museum in the city will be right up their street!

The Brighton Toy and Model Museum has 10,000 toys to look at, which date as far back as the 1880s and stretch right up to the present day.

It really is the ideal day trip for the whole family, as parents and grandparents are sure to remember items from their youth too!

If your kids want summer activities for children involving trains, they can wonder at the museums pair of working model railways, one of which is based on the countryside in Sussex.

You'll only have to pay £4 for adults and £3 for your children, making it a cheap excursion.

If you're in the city this summer, you might also want to take the kids to Booth Museum of Natural History, which features a quirky collection of stuffed birds.

Change a child's room cheaply

Us: You can revive your child's bedroom by letting them make their own beanbag and door sign, as well as livening up their walls.

If you've got kids who want their rooms updating but you can't afford a make-over of Changing Rooms' proportions, fear not!

There are a few projects big kids can carry out and little ones too, with a bit of help from you.

How about letting them make their own beanbags to relax on, a door sign for their room and a stencilled design on walls?

It's in the bag

When it comes to making beanbags, all you'll need is some material (in a pattern your child likes of course), a needle and some stuffing (dried peas work well).

You can get your hands on material from the haberdashery department in John Lewis or from local markets fairly cheaply.

Cut two large circular shapes out of the material, turn both pieces so that their front sides face one another and stitch them together all the way round the edges, making sure that you leave a gap of around two centimetres in one spot.

Then simply turn it inside out and add dried peas (or cotton wool if you want it to be really fluffy) to the item, before stitching the gap you left before. Simple!

Now all they have to do is lie back on their new beanbag and relax, while they think of all the fun they'll have at summer camps!

Stencil it in

Now that kids have made their beanbag, they might be in the decorating mood. If so, they can liven up dull walls by adding a stencilled shape to a surface.

You may want to try butterfly or letter stencils, where kids can spell out their names or write phrases.

To make pretty, colourful artwork, all you have to do is coat a plastic bag (you're recycling too!) with PVA glue, before covering it in different colours of tissue paper, and adding another coat of the glue.

Then get kids to add an extra layer of tissue paper and add more glue before leaving it to dry.
When that's done, peel the bag off the paper and use a stencil to draw a butterfly, letter or shape on the paper before this is cut out (a star looks good!).

These colourful creations look perfect when stuck to windows, where you'll see lots of light shining through them on sunny days!

Sign it out

If your kids want to mark their territory, how about creating a sign for their bedroom door? It can have their name on it and be whatever colour they like.
All you'll need for this is craft paint, a small wooden plank, different sized paintbrushes, foam stamps, fabric, craft glue, stickers and a sealer.
Kids can start by painting the wood in their colour of choice, allowing this to dry and then writing their name on it in a different hue, using a stencil if they want it to be really neat.
Foam stamps can be used to further decorate the item, as well as stickers, before a coat of sealer is added to keep it looking lovely.

All you have to do now is use some string, both ends of which can be glued to the top right and top left corners on the back of the sign, and then can be hung from a plastic hook on a bedroom door.
Now that your kid's room is looking lovely, you'll probably want to get started on the rest of the house too!

Try summer activities for children at a guided walk

This weekend (Sunday June 19th), you can take the kids to try summer activities for children on a special guided walk.

The Secret Life of the Riverside guided walk takes place along the beautiful banks of the River Stour in Essex at the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) Wildlife Garden at Flatford.

An expert guide will walk alongside you, while you look out for a number of birds that you may be lucky enough to spot, such as a Kingfisher or Barn Owl.

The evening walk is held between 19:00 and 21:00 BST.

If you're a member of the RSPB, you'll only have to fork out £3 and £1 for your child.

Don't worry if you're not though, as you can still try cheap summer activities for children, as it's £2 for kids and £4 for you.

If you can't make this walk, there's a guided butterfly walk being held on Sunday July 3rd at Stour Wood.

Children's camps news: Roman exhibition comes to Cambridge!

With summer holiday camps yet to start, it's likely that you'll be looking for ways to keep the kids busy when they're out of school.

Luckily, if you live in Cambridgeshire, you've still got time to visit Ely Musuem for The Romans exhibition, which runs until July 6th.

Here, your kids (and you!) can find out loads more about what life was like in a Cambridgeshire town during Roman times.

You can look at some interesting artefacts, like rings, brooches and tweezers, that'll really make you feel like you're travelling back to Roman times!

If your kids are looking for summer activities for children and prefer art to history, you can always treat them to a trip to the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge.

Here, they can look at Italian etchings made by artists from the 16th to 18th centuries, like Guido Reni, Parmigianino and Castiglino.

They can see these pieces until August 29th.

It may even give them inspiration to create their own artwork at home!

This Fathers' Day (Sunday June 19th), you're sure to want to combine summer activities for children with events that dads will enjoy too. It's their day after all!

The whole family will be catered for at Knebworth House, which is holding a Fathers' Day Cars & Motorcycles in the Park and BBQ event for the occasion.

At the lunchtime pork BBQ, everyone can fill up on fuel while they enjoy the view from the Lodge Barn's terrace.

Each dad will also be happy when they get a pint of draught beer for free!

After this, they can carry on looking at the 350 plus classic cars and motorbikes that are on display, the perfect way to keep kids entertained when they aren't at activity camps.

The day runs from 10:00 until 17:00 BST and the BBQ will be on between 12:00 and 14:30.

Alternatively, you might want to spend Fathers' day at the British Schools Museum in Hitchin, where you can learn more about the Victorian classroom and have a lesson yourself!

Big kids and little kids all like cartoons, so what better way to try summer activities for children than at an exhibition of animation?

The Barbican Art Gallery in London is holding Watch Me Move: The Animation Show, where you can watch screenings and listen to interesting talks around animation.

Here you'll find out loads more about the topic from over the last 150 years, such as how it began with stop frame photography and progressed to the technological advances we enjoy today.

There's loads on offer, such as Japanese anime, Disney classics and Aardman characters.

You can also see some well-loved characters dating from the 1930s, such as Betty Boop, Tom and Jerry and Mickey Mouse, perfect summer activities for children!

It only cosst £7 to £8 for concessions and kids under 12 go free. Tickets for big kids cost £12 on the door, or £10 if you buy them online.

If your kids love films, you can also take them to the Barbican on June 18th to watch a screening of Five Children and It, which is based on the E Nesbit novel.

Summer activities for children come to Ayot Literary Festival

If your kids love spending time at summer camps then they must enjoy trying fun new activities – and near Upminster next month there's a lively evening of Gaelic song and dance planned that'll have the whole family on their feet!

Head to the Barn Dance at North Street Halls in Hornchurch, Essex, on Saturday July 16th July, and you might just discover a few hidden talents among your clan. It's suitable for all ages and abilities, so everyone can join in and have a ball.

Just like the activities at your kids' favourite summer camps, there are full instructions – courtesy of the Foot Up Ceilidh Band's caller – to explain all of the moves before the music begins. And he'll keep yelling them out as the hoe down gets underway.

Families are advised to wear comfortable clothing and guests are invited to bring along their own drinks and nibbles, to help make it an intimate social affair that no one will forget in a hurry.

Summer activities for children can be fun as well as educational.

Youngsters who want to learn a new skill can do so at the Joss Bay Surf School in Kent, which is holding a number of Beach Safety and Lifeguarding Training sessions this year.

In this programme, your kids will learn more about the local beach and how they can have fun in the sea safely.

When activity day camps aren't running, kids can try the programme, where they will also learn about the role that lifeguards play, the water safety code, basic first aid, rookie lifeguard training, personal safety and more about the sea.

The programme is running on various Saturdays throughout June, July and August and September, including June 18th, June 25th, July 2nd and July 9th.

If your family are fans of outdoors activities, you can also try Kent's Viking Coastal Trail, a 27 mile route that you can cycle or walk along, viewing chalk cliffs, sandy beaches and beautiful bays on the way.

Reading Steady Go! looks at how youth culture exploded in the 1960s and how it still has an impact on fashion and music today.

The event, which is being held at Reading Museum & Town Hall, will let youngsters find out more about how the town left the post war years and produced Baby Boomers, who had more free time and money to spend than ever before.

In this era, young adults were called teenagers for the first time and there were a fair few styles sported by teens, such as rockabilly, teddy boy, mod and beatnik.

The Street Fest is being held at Letchworth Garden City and is celebrating its first birthday this year!

Shrek The Musical is running at the Theatre Royal on London's Drury Lane until next year, so there's plenty of time to catch it!

The musical stars a host of famous faces, including Richard Blackwood, Nigel Lindsay and Britain's Got Talent judge Amanda Holden.

In the play, Shrek (Lindsay), along with his friend Donkey (Blackwood), embarks on a thrilling adventure to save the stunning Princess Fiona (Holden), who's stuck in a tower that's guarded by a love-sick dragon.

Disney fans might also want to see a production of the Lion King, which is running at London's Lyceum Theatre.

Try Japanese summer activities for children

There is still time to take the kids to try summer activities for kids with a Japanese theme in London.

Until Friday June 3rd the Geffrye Museum is holding Japanese Homes, where there are a host of activities that have drawn inspiration from the At Home in Japan exhibition.

Kids between the ages of three and five can listen to traditional Japanese nursery rhymes between 12:00 BST and 13:00 BST and children over the age of eight can try silk painting on kimono fabrics between 14:00 BST and 16:00 BST.

There are also a number of other craft activities being held for kids at the event, like the opportunity to make a Bento box, decorate a noodle bowl and a chance to assemble their own monster masks.

After this you can treat them to even more summer holiday activities for children!

Elsewhere in London there's also loads of stuff to do with the kids to keep them entertained. How about heading down to the Victoria and Albert Museum of Childhood?

Here little ones can take part in storytelling sessions and listen to The Tiger Who Came to Tea by Judith Kerr until June 5th.

Experience Spanish summer activities for children

If you're looking for ways to keep the kids entertained next weekend, how about trying Spanish summer activities for children with them?

For the sixth year running, London is holding its A Taste of Spain event, where you can experience the country's sport, entertainment, food, music and art, making for a jam-packed day!

The free event runs from 12:00 BST until 19:00 BST on Sunday June 5th and focuses on different Spanish regions, such as Andalucia and Aragon, making it educational for little ones too.

On the day, brass band Charanga Chicuelina will perform live and you'll be able to take part in a competition to win free Spanish lessons.

When you get peckish there will even be giant paellas on offer, yum!

There's also set to be a host of other culinary delights, such as jamon and Spanish gazpacho, on offer, as well as a food market from Navarra.

Summer activities for children at Blackwater Country Show

If you're looking for summer activities for children you're sure to find plenty at the Blackwater Country Show!

At this traditional event all the family can take part in activities and watch lots of fun attractions too.

This eyar will be the sixth time the show has been held and there'll be heavy horses, sheep dog and falconry demonstrations.

If you've got a furry friend you can even enter them in the dog show!

Kids age six plus can head to Bedgebury for expert tuition in the sport from Steve Walker, a level two coach who used to work for Kent Sports Development Unit.

Steve said: "We cater for all ages and abilities from six years upwards. Care homes and day services are especially welcome, as are group bookings and birthday parties. We supply all the equipment."

One lady, Nicola Jane Stephens, who tried the sport with Steve said that she was "hooked", while another, Jennie Brockhurst, commented on how she enjoyed practicing archery in "pleasant surroundings".

You can book children into an hourly slot on Friday, Saturday, Sunday or Monday from 10:00 BST each morning and on every day while school's out. Even better, these summer activities for kids only cost £5!

This sport could be great for kids as it'll improve their hand to eye co-ordination, teach them to be patient and let them make more friends, too.

Kids (and adults!) still have time to experience a temporary exhibition at the Chertsey Museum, where they can learn more about the 1950s.

The Fabulous Fifties shows how domestic life changed between the 1850s and 1950s, offering you a glimpse back into the past.

This display, which was opened on May 13th, runs until April next year and is free to enter.

Summer activities for children are also provided by the museum in the form of the Brides Revisited display, which will be around for your enjoyment until August this year.

At this exhibition you can look at wedding gowns that come from the Olive Matthews Collection and date from the 18th century to modern times.

If you've still got time to spare after visiting the museum, how about going to the nearby town of Staines?

If your children are artistic, why not take them along to Mini Masterpieces – Kids Saturday Art Club at Petworth House and Park?

This is a drop-in workshop for families where kids aged three to 11 can let their creativity flow, get messy and try working with loads of different materials.

It's likely that at some point you'll run out of ways to keep children entertained when they're out of kids camps and they'll utter that feared phrase: "I'm bored!"

Don't worry! We've got several boredom-busting ideas to keep them occupied on evenings and weekends that'll keep them having fun for hours to come.

Cabbage patch kids

Kids who like to get their hands dirty will love to create their own vegetable patch in your garden. Doing this will not only provide yummy food for your table but will also encourage them to eat more healthily (a constant struggle!) and give them an idea of where their grub comes from.

Courgettes can be planted at this time of year and will be ready in around ten weeks and carrots can be put in the ground until July and will grow within 12 weeks.

You can also grow cabbage and then make coleslaw from it or use it instead of lettuce for sandwiches in the summer picnics to come. Yum!

Lots of shops have gardening equipment designed for smaller hands so you can pick up a watering can and get kids to water their own vegetable patch.

Let it rain

On rainy days when you don't want to leave the house and get drenched you can still do gardening projects indoors with a terranium. All you'll need for this is a two-litre pop bottle, potting soil, water, seeds and scissors.

Diarmuid Gavin, who presents Gardeners' World, told the Mirror that people can make gardening more interesting for kids by deciding to "plant bright primary coloured flowers that children like".

One variety that can be kept in a terranium is African violets, which will add a splash of colour to a room, or miniature bromeliads, such as the aechmea inky, a plant with pretty pink flowers.

Kids can easily create their own terranium by washing the bottle out, cutting it near the base and filling the bottom with soil. Seeds can then be planted and watered before the two sections of the bottle are positioned back together. Easy peasy.

Now all you have to do is wait for your plants to grow!

Cooking up a storm

When all of your kids' vegetables are ready it's time to cook them!

You can buy readymade pizza bases (or make pizza dough if you've got the time) and let kids decorate their own with tomato paste, cheese and a selection of vegetables they've grown in the garden. That way they can't say "I don't like it mum!" as they've chosen it themselves!

Another option is to design foods in the shape of animals to get kids interested. A sweet treat can be created from raisins, an apple, honey and cocktail sticks. The apple should be cut in half, and raisins dabbed in honey, before they're stuck to its outside. Then the grapes can be stuck on the ends of four cocktail sticks, which are inserted into the

sides of the apple for legs. There you have it: A ladybird!

If your kids are big on reading and are Roald Dahl fans you could always buy them the author's Revolting Recipes book, which tells them how to concoct much of the food from his treasured tales. Snozzcumbers anyone?

Sock it to them

When your kids are full thoughts will turn to what to do next to make the most of the day. How about making sock puppets?

They can liven up a dull afternoon and can be made from nothing more than an old pair of socks (that reach your elbow) and some accessories. You can even go all out and make several for a puppet show. The puppets can be made to look like humans, or animals and can be named to help kids feel that they have their own personalities.

Eyes should be placed on the spot on the socks where toes would reach. Wool is a good material to use for a sock puppet's hair and felt can be used to create a tongue.

By this point your kids should be tired out and ready for bed giving you time for some much needed relaxation.

If you live in the south-east of England you may want to take the family to Bletchley Park for summer holiday activities with a retro feel.

On Sunday May 29th and Monday May 30th, the historic venue is holding its Forties Family Festival, which is so popular that it's held year after year!

Last year alone around 3,000 people headed to the venue for the weekend, as well as more than 250 World War Two re-enactors.

But don't worry if you can't make this weekend! Bletchley Park is also open throughout the year, and you won't have to pay anything for kids under 12 if they arrive with a family group.

Colchester Castle Museum holds summer holiday activities

If you're in Essex the answer is Colchester Castle Museum, which is holding a Roman Legionary Life event.

Between Monday May 30th and Friday June 3rd, kids can meet a Roman soldier at several points throughout the day for no more than the price of admission to the castle.

The soldier will show visitors the weapons he used, the clothes he wore and what army life was like. It's the perfect chance to take some interesting snaps!

Kids looking for summer holiday activities can also find out about how the castle was built on an old Roman temple by the Romans and has since acted as a gaol for witches and a library.

Bedford children take part in Walk to School Week

We all know it is important for children to gain exercise and one guaranteed way of doing this is by walking to school.

For the past five days it has been National Walk to School Week, which has encouraged youngsters to skip getting a lift with their parents and instead make their own way to the school gates.

It provides an excellent opportunity for kids to get some fresh air and exercise while also learning about the benefits to the environment of giving the car a miss.

They can also pick up tips on road and general safety, all at the same time as spending more time with their friends and having a chat on the way to school.

Healthy summer pickings as Britain ready for bumper strawberry season

Fruit, vegetables and cooking might not be three things that children are naturally interested in, however, get them picking their own and it's a whole different ball game.

This season is expected to reap a strawberry bonanza, so how about taking the kids out to a local farm and get them to choose their own fruit?

Not only does this get them out of the house, but it shows them fruit in its purest form, when it is at its ripest and tastiest.

Get them to pick punnets of strawberries, raspberries and blueberries and then let them have a taste while they are still warm.

Next, get the kids in the kitchen and help them to make mini strawberry tarts, or even jam, which they can then eat in the morning with a slice of toast.

Furthermore, with a heat wave coming up, there could be nothing better than a strawberry smoothie, perhaps with a scoop of ice cream in it for good behaviour.

Benefits of physical activity need to be promoted to kids

Everyone wants to lead a long and happy life, and staying fit and healthy really could be child's play.

New research from Skane University, published in the Acta Paediatrica journal, has shown that getting outside and messing around with friends can give kids a kick-start in life.

It found that young boys enjoyed on average 45 minutes of moderate exercise a day, with 15 minutes really getting the heart pumping – perhaps through kicking a ball around or playing tag.

Girls were shown to be not as active, which could be a great reason to find school holiday activities for them.

If you are concerned that extra play time might interfere with school, then worry not.

Natasha Stewart from the British Heart Foundation said that concentration can in fact be improved in kids who are physically active.

So what are you waiting for? The summer is nearly here so get the kids outside and running around!

FA qualified and CRB checked coaches will be on hand to pass down their tips and expertise, making the sessions fun and safe for those taking part.

Heatwave could spark kids camps demand

After a dry and mostly warm April, May has yet to live up to our expectations in terms of sunshine and warmth.

However, fear not, as a heatwave is set to hit Britain during the remaining two weeks of this month, which could help spark a demand for kids camps throughout the summer.

Summer activities for kids held in Newbury

Children who are interested in battles and history will want to check out the summer activities for kids being held in Newbury this month.

The Berkshire town is set to host The Battle of Newbury 2011- Sealed Knot event, where visitors will find that they are taken back to the English Civil War.

Between Saturday May 28th and Monday May 30th, kids can try holiday activities when they walk through the Living History Camp at Newbury Showground where they can discover loads about soldiers from the era.

They will see these men training for battle with muskets, pikes and swords and also view the tradesmen who travelled with the army.

Then they'll get to see a battle re-enactment in the afternoon! The action-packed 1644 Battle of Newbury will be played out with cannons and cavalry.

Adult tickets start from £8.50 (when bought in advance) and you'll only have to pay £3.50 for kids between the ages of five and 16.

Children who are eagerly awaiting the time when they can get back to day camps for kids can be kept occupied until then at a festival in Kent.

The Discover Gravesham Festival will last throughout May, giving you plenty of time to head down there.

Younger children who want to try summer activities for kids can go to an extra special picnic in Surrey this month.

On Saturday May 21st the Surrey Wildlife Trust is holding the Hythe Park Teddy Bears' Picnic in the town of Egham and little ones can bring their furry friends along between 12:00 BST and 16:00 BST.

Your kids will also be able to take part in some fun wildlife activities, balloon modelling, face painting and look at a display on teddy bears through the ages.

There's also a Grand Fancy Dress Competition for the stuffed toys, with prizes being awarded to those who dress to the themes of TV and films, myths and fairytales and explorers and scientists.

Beecroft Gallery is holding Painted Words – White Rabbits, Heroes and Scoundrels until June 4th, giving you plenty of time to head down to the gallery.

When you visit this exhibition you'll see local artist Karen Jones' interpretations of literature's heroes and villains, and celebrate the written word.

The gallery's website said: "Karen’s distinctive style and fresh new interpretations bring to life some of written word’s most iconic characters."

There will soon be a number of summer activities for kids with a difference being held in London.

The capital is the location for Museums At Night, a weekend during which a number of these attractions will be open for visitors at night.

From May 13th to 15th there will be a number of events, screening and tours in the city as part of this.

You and your kids may want to join in a candlelit tour of Sir John Soane's Museum on Friday May 13th, spooky!

Older children looking for summer activities for kids may also appreciate the Life and Death Treasure Hunt, a treasure hunt in which people have to find different artefacts after being given clues.

Participants will start the night at University College London's Chadwick Lecture Theatre and visit the Grant and Petrie museums along the way.

Kids may also want to go to a family story telling session at the National Gallery, which is being held for free on May 13th.

James Daley, Which? Money Quarterly expert, told MadeforMums.com that there are a whole host of fun holiday activities that kids can try on a shoe-string budget.

He advised checking out local council-run sports centres for cheap swimming classes, while some local authorities still offer free opportunities to take a plunge in the pool.

Learning to swim or how to ride a bike can be one of the most fulfilling stages of a child's early life, and also a proud moment for any parent.

Holiday activities such as these are important skills to have as they grow older, allowing them to enjoy hours of fun outside on a bike or swimming parties with friends.

New research from Tata Steel recently found that 15 per cent of kids cannot swim, while ten per cent were also unable to ride a bike, with many choosing to stay indoors and watch TV instead.

Mike Diaper, Sport England's executive director of children and young people, advised parents to set up holiday activities for their children.

"What we've found is that when you actually talk to youngsters ask them what sports they want to do in their own time, where they want to do them, and you actually try and provide that, they will actually take that opportunity up," he added.

As well as staying fit and healthy, encouraging your kids to get outside in the fresh air and play can help them learn social skills and improve their imagination through role-playing.

The Festival of Living Crafts at Hatfield House will feature a range of traditional and modern British crafts for your kids to be inspired by.

How to keep the kids entertained on rainy days

At the moment it's hot outside and kids are occupied at school (giving you a well deserved rest!)
But what do you do after your children have finished at kids camps and the current heatwave is over? On rainy weekends, there are three fun art activities for children that you can try to keep them occupied indoors without the need to resort to the TV or computer.
Say cheese
Kids might want to make their own photo frames to keep treasured family pictures of Easter holiday activities in. All you'll need in order to do this is two pieces of strong cardboard, which should be three inches wider and taller than the size of the photo you're going to display. The shape of the picture (but one-fourth smaller all round than the photo) should then be cut out from the centre of one of the pieces of cardboard.
Children can then let their artistic streak run wild and decorate one side of the pieces with the cut out using paint, glitter, markers, Lego pieces (for a more masculine look!), bottle tops and stamps. More is definitely more! They may even want to stick pasta to it and paint over the pieces to add texture.
After this piece of card has dried, you should turn it over and apply glue around the cut-out area and near to the outside of the card, before laying your picture of choice face down onto the card.
The second piece of card can also be decorated and should be glued on its bare side after this and stuck to the back of the photo.
Small hands can then stick a loop of ribbon to the back surface of the frame, which will act as a hanger. Voila!

Store your snaps
If your kids have got so many pictures to choose from that they can't pick their favourite, a scrap book could be a better option. There are so many possibilities when it comes to this memento – it can be filled with tickets from days out, as well as photos, recipes, paintings, drawings and souvenirs.
The book may also be organised by theme, a certain event or chronologically.
Kids should work out what they want their scrapbook to contain before they decide on the size they will need to fit everything in. Once they've bought it, they can plan what will go on each page to avoid making messy mistakes further down the line.
Other items that kids will need for this project include scissors, glue (mounting squares or photo corners), different colours and styles of paper, various shaped punches, crayons, stencils, stickers and coloured pencils.

Paint it black, or orange, or yellow!
If your kids are interested in art activities for children they can also try painting. Maybe your youngster will even become the next Monet or Picasso!
A fun task to try is buying an old painting that is faded from a charity or second-hand shop (just make sure it isn't a priceless original) and letting kids brighten the image up by painting over the existing canvas with vivid colours.
In this way you can liven up an old piece of artwork and maybe create something that looks even better and can be proudly displayed in your child's room.
By the time you've tried all of these activities, the sun will hopefully be shining again and your kids can head outdoors once more!

I’d heard good things about Barracudas but of course was awry of leaving my little boy with a group of strangers. I needn’t have worried; he came out claiming he couldn’t remember EVERYTHING that he’d done that day because he had done so much....go-karting, swimming, bouncy castle and much more.
I’m booking a couple of weeks in the summer for sure. The way I see it is if he attends camp for the day and I continue to work he gets to have a blast all day for less than what it would cost for the two of us to be entertained for the day going to the zoo/adventure park, etc. It’s local, it’s great fun for him and it lasts all day. Sometimes going out for the ‘day’ doesn’t last all day and it’s never enough – they always want something from the shop, an ice cream and of course the fuel getting there isn’t cheap.
Barracudas is cheaper than doing all of the things us parents find stressful and the kids have such an awesome time!

My daughter, Tia, has just completed her first holiday camp with Barracudas and what tremendous fun she's had!
Despite having loads of experience of holiday clubs since the age of four, she has voted Barracudas no.1 and can't wait to attend summer camp. Her beaming face at the end of each day proved what a great time she'd had, from fencing and archery to giant obstacle courses and arts and crafts, from quad bikes to fancy dress. These are just some of the activities on offer throughout the week plus the chance to meet new people meant she made new friends as well as enjoying herself.
The staff were absolutely wonderful, extremely professional and friendly and special thanks goes to Laura and Jill for all their hard work, enthusiasm and constant smiley faces!

We all know that exercise is good for you, and parents need to do as much as possible to ensure their young ones are active if the latest research is anything to go by.
Researchers at the University of Sydney found that kids as young as six who spend hours in front of the TV or a computer are showing early signs of high blood pressure.
In a nod towards booking physical activities for children, the boffins said that children who spent more time watching TV than playing outside had narrower arteries.
Meanwhile, those that lark around with their friends, kicking a football about or exerting energy for an hour or more each day were found to have "significantly" wider arteries.
While it is not a particularly pleasant thought, the message is clear, kids should be encouraged to get up off the sofa and take part in outdoor activities as action now could have a hugely positive effect on the rest of their lives.

When your kids have finished attending activity day camps, you can treat them to a night of frights on a child-friendly ghost walk.
Head down to the Historic Dockyard in Chatham in Kent on Friday April 15th to take part in a Junior Ghost Walk. The whole family can attend and learn more about the scary headless drummer boy! At the end of the tour you'll also get to make a piece of rope.
Children should be at least eight to attend the Easter holiday activities on offer and only have to pay £7, while adult entry costs £5.
This event begins at 19:00 BST, shortly before darkness falls, and lasts for just over one hour, giving you a bit of time to explore the dockyards before.
The area has been used in lots of films and TV shows, such as Sherlock Holmes, The Golden Compass and Oliver Twist, and it's easy to see why (by daylight at least!).

If you live in Cambridgeshire and fancy making the most of this weekend's hot weather, how about visiting a historic garden to try easter holiday activities?

You can go to Burghley House's gardens and bask in the warmth while you explore the historic parkland, which also has a section with interesting modern sculptures.

If the weather takes a turn for the worse, the house itself is also worth a look. It's been used for both The Da Vinci Code and Pride and Prejudice so you'll really feel like you're on a film set! Your budding culture vultures can also look at the 17th century Italian paintings, eighteen state rooms and Japanese Ceramics.

It could be time to dust off the shorts, sunglasses and outdoor play equipment with temperatures expected to reach 22C today in some areas of Britain, making it hotter than places like Barcelona.
The good weather in the south-east of the country is expected to continue into the weekend,where kids will no doubt be itching to get their summer activities underway.
It makes a pleasant change from the usual April fare, which generally sees the thermometer hovering around 12C, while rain often puts a dampener on the fun.
"Today will possibly be the warmest day this year, with warm, dry weather and sunny spells across much of England. It warms up again for the weekend, with temperatures in the upper 60s (Fahrenheit) or higher on both Saturday and Sunday," said the Met Office's good news bringer Andrew Sibley.
While mum and dad might think of inviting friends round for a barbecue, this weekend could be an ideal opportunity to get the kids out in the garden and enjoying the early summer spell.

Between April 8th and 10th (three whole days of fun!) you can attend The Chocolate Festival, the sixth time that this popular event has been run.
It's free to attend and runs between 11:00 BST and 20:00 BST on the Friday and the Saturday and 11:00 BST and 18:00 BST on the Sunday, which is sure to keep the kids busy for a while.
While here you can try a variety of savoury and sweet chocolate dishes and take part in a tutored tasting session, which are sure to be a fun summer activities for kids.

If you need an excuse to get kids more active and to try new activities when they play, recent research could have provided it.
A study from the University of Bristol found that children could try new activities that are physical if parents encourage them to take part in play that is active rather than more sedentary, just the excuse to get them outdoors!
The study, called What Is The Meaning and Nature of Active Play For Today's Children In The UK?, found kids thought that play constituted a number of activities, including relaxed pursuits and more active ones.
"Contemporary children do engage in active play and value both the physical and social benefits it provides. This suggests that some children, at least, do not prefer to spend all their time watching TV or on computer," Rowan Brockman, a researcher in the Centre for Exercise, Nutrition and Health Sciences at Bristol University, said.
The research also found that girls and boys wanted to try new activities. Males wanted to ride bikes or play football, but girls did not having one specific pursuit that they favoured.
Despite this last finding, girls in Swindon have given a big thumbs up to football. A two-day development course that was organised by the Swindon Town Football in the Community Trust saw over 30 young females given coaching sessions and taking part in tournaments and competitions.

Over this month and next month the Little Shop of Horrors will be performed at the Boxmore Playhouse by the Hemel Hempstead Theatre Company.

The rock-musical focuses on Seymour Krelborn, a worker at Mr Mushnik's Florists, who finds an unusual exotic plant. He calls it Audrey II (after Audrey, the girl he loves) and soon discovers that the plant has a humungous appetite and is plotting world domination. Scary!

1. Research what’s on offer in your local area. Ask friends for recommendations or check with your local Family Information Service for registered day camp providers.
2. Visit the website. What are your first impressions? Does the company look professional and fun? Request a brochure or information pack.
3. Check that the provider has been operating for a number of years so you know they are reliable and experienced.
4. Check what the facilities are like and that the camp is convenient for you to get to each day. Does the camp offer extended hours to fit in with your work or travel arrangements?
5. Find out if the camp is registered with Ofsted. (NB: Some camps do not have to register, but these do not cover all age groups or only offer a limited number of activities.) 2. Visit the website. What are your first impressions? Does the company look professional and fun? Request a brochure or information pack.
3. Check that the provider has been operating for a number of years so you know they are reliable and experienced.
4. Check what the facilities are like and that the camp is convenient for you to get to each day. Does the camp offer extended hours to fit in with your work or travel arrangements?
5. Find out if the camp is registered with Ofsted. (NB: Some camps do not have to register, but these do not cover all age groups or only offer a limited number of activities.) You can check the camps latest Ofsted report by visiting www.ofsted.gov.uk. Find out if they are as good as they say they are!
6. Call and speak to the provider first hand and ask any questions you’d like reassurance on.
7. Involve your child in the decision. Show them the website and/or brochure and what activities will be available. Most importantly does your child think the camp looks like FUN? This is after all their holiday time and they deserve the best experience!
